The Tan Kah Kee Science Award, formerly known as Tan Kah Kee Award established in 1988, was named after Mr. Tan Kah Kee (1874-1961), a renowned overseas Chinese leader who had remarkably contributed to the development of science and education in China. Funded by CAS and Bank of China, with RMB 30 million, the Tan Kah Kee Science Award Foundation (TSAF) was registered and established in February 2003. The mission of TSAF is to reward Chinese outstanding scientists who have made major original and innovative scientific and technological achievements in order to promote scientific and technological development in China and to rejuvenate the Chinese nation. It is aimed to award the living Chinese citizens who have made significant scientific and technological achievements which are recognized as innovative and original in recent years. The Tan Kah Kee Science Awards are presented in six fields: mathematic and physical sciences, chemical sciences, life sciences, earth sciences, information technological sciences, and technological sciences. The Awards are selected every two years, with only one granted in each field. The Awards will be presented at the General Assembly of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering by leaders from the State Council. Bank of China added a donation of RMB 10 million to TSAF in May 2008 to support the development of science and technology in China and encourage homegrown scientists' independent innovation.
Drawing upon the platform of Tan Kah Kee Science Award, the Tan Kah Kee Science Award Symposium jointly held by Bank of China and CAS is aimed to spread the knowledge of science and technology to the public and promote the all-round development of science and technology in China.
